BEng Year 4 Semester 1

Modules taken during Year 4 Semester 1:
- AE4001/MA4701 Aircraft Structures 2 (3AU)
- AE4011 Aircraft Design (3AU)
- BU8301 Fundamentals of Business Law (3AU)
- LK9001 Korean Level 1 (3AU)
- LF9001 French Level 1 (3AU)

Total No. of AU: 15
Overall GPA:

AE4001/MA4701 Aircraft Structures 2 (3AU)
Lecturers: Assoc Prof Ong Lin Seng, Assoc Prof Ng Teng Yong, Dr. Brian Stephen Wong
Personal Notes
Assignment
Study Techniques: Practice questions
Result:
Topics: Bending & Shearing of Thin-Walled Structures, Fracture Mechanics, Finite Element Method, Non-Destructive Testing
Review:
Prof Ong covers the first 2 parts on bending & shearing, as well as fracture mechanics. This part is 40% of the final paper. While his teaching was alright, his pace was too fast due to the limited time given, as it was difficult to absorb what was taught.
Prof Ng's teaching was fabulous. His pace was just right, and he helps us to understand concept taught with the use of appropriate examples. However, the FEM assignment that he gave was taught and required a lot of time to run the simulations. It would be best not to skip the tutorials for FEM assignment, as you can 'share' findings with your friends (i.e. know that who got the best results and thus copy his shape). With practice and careful calculation, this segment is alright. It is important to master this topic as it covers 50% of the final.
While NDT was supposed to be easy and straightforward, I was a little confused by Dr. Wong's teaching. I feel that he has a lot to share with us, yet he is required to cover the examinable concepts.

AE4011 Aircraft Design (3AU)
For MA4701 Aircraft Design I (3AU) and MA4703 Aircraft Design II (2AU)
Lecturers: Assoc Prof. Tonse Gokuldas Pai, Assoc Prof. Sunil Chandrakant Joshi
Phase 1 Presentation
Phase 2 Presentation
Final Presentation

Review:
This is 1 of the toughest and time-consuming module for the whole Aerospace Engineering education. It consists of 3 presentations and 1 group report.

The professor that you'll be liaising with most of the time is Prof. Pai. Because of this module, my opinion of him changes from what I had of him after AE3002. Contrary to other Aerospace students have of him, I feel that he is the most 'zai' professor in the Aerospace faculty. He practically knows everything about aircraft, from the preliminary designs all the way to costing. Likewise, he is proficient in any aspects of the aircraft, whether it is structures, flight control or aerodynamics. He was nice to help students with problem outside tutorial time. However, he do ask tough questions during Q&A for presentation, so it is best to know what you are doing.

For this module, it is best to form groups with people early (in fact, before the registration of the module), and with people that you know you can work with. It will be good if each member of the group is specialised in each field of Aerospace (Propulsion, Flight Control, Structures).

LK9001 Korean Level 1 (3AU)
Tutor: Dr. Yoon Meekyung
Personal Notes
Study Techniques: Memorise vocabulary and understand sentence structure
Result: S
Review:
Dr. Yoon is very patient with her teaching, and also can be quite strict in that she makes sure that you submit your homework at the end of each lesson. If you happen to miss 1 of her classes, she would give you a brief overview at the end of the lesson so that you won't miss out much. Although I did not ask about other teachers for the same course, I can say that she is one of the best teachers.
This module is quite tough as compared to French. After every lesson, I have to spend 2-3 hours to complete each homework. On top of that, there are 4 class quizzes, 2 listening quizzes and 1 individual oral presentation (script has to be memorised). It is a tough module, and you can do well only if you're passionate about K-pop and korean drama. I decided to S/U the subject as I could not gauge how well I score among the cohort, and did not want to take the risk.

LF9001 French Level 1 (3AU)
Tutor: Mr Francais Bretault Rene Marie
Personal Notes
Study Techniques: Memorise grammar form
Result: S
Review:

Mr Francais is one of the best French teacher for the foundation course in French language (based on reviews by my friends who have taken the course). He builds up our foundation in the first lesson by teaching us how to pronounce the French alphabets (although it's not needed for this course). The first few lessons are tough, but I appreciate it towards the end of the semester as it becomes very easy to study the sentence structures taught. This is unlike another French class that I managed to crash unknowingly, where the tutor just start with the syllabus and do not care much about the students' progress.
Mr Francais' class is usually quite fun. He allows us to make mistakes in class so that we can learnt from them. Our progress is also monitored as he often ask us to 'fill in the blanks' in class. Also, he helps to sustain our interest in the language, by introducing French songs of various genres to us (although I was more interested in K-pop then). If I had taken this module earlier, I would very much want to do the second level course with him.
I decided to S/U the subject as I could not gauge how well I score among the cohort and did not want to take the risk (I got 25/30 for CA1 and 22/30 for CA2. Oral exam grades should be quite good as our presentation is quite well prepared and humorous). Final exam for this semester is easy as well.
